LevelK acquires Berlinale Generation K+-selected Everyone’s Sorry Nowadays
International sales and aggregation house LevelK has boarded Frederike Migom’s Everyone’s Sorry Nowadays, a tender and imaginative story about discovery, dreams and claiming your own space. The film will celebrate its world premiere in the Generation K+ selection at this year’s Berlinale.
Produced by Ivy Vanhaecke for De Mensen, and based on a novel by Bart Moeyaert, Everyone’s Sorry Nowadays unfolds on a sweltering summer day, where 13‑year‑old Bianca wrestles with feeling unseen by her parents. An unexpected encounter with her favourite actress, Billie King, becomes the spark that helps her find her voice.
LevelK CEO Tine Klint: "We’re very happy to be working with Frederike again. She captures the world of 13‑year‑old Bianca with remarkable clarity and insight, allowing audiences of any age to truly feel and understand her."
Frederike Migom: “Everyone’s Sorry Nowadays explores the overwhelming noise that fills your mind when you feel unheard and the way imagination can become a lifeline. Bianca’s world - full of humour, chaos, and big emotions - is the beating heart of this film, lovingly brought to life by an extraordinary cast and crew. I am deeply grateful to Bart Moeyaert for allowing me to discover my own story within his beautiful novel. It brings me immense joy and pride to be invited to share this film for the first time in Berlin.”
Migom’s feature debut Binti (2019) was presented at Sundance 2020, screened at more than 65 festivals and won numerous awards. Her short Nkosi Coiffure (2015) played at the Tribeca Festival and the BFI London Film Festival. She also co-directed four episodes of the TV series Alter Ego (2023) and is in the process of finishing documentary series May I be (me).
The film stars Lisa Vanhemelrijck as Bianca, Laurence Roothooft (Julian) and Sachli Gholamalizad (The Persian Version, The Misfortunates). DOP is Esmoreit Lutters, while Christine Houbiers is responsible for the editing.
Everyone's Sorry Nowadays is based on Migom’s screenplay adaptation of Moeyaert’s ’Tegenwoordig heet iedereen Sorry’ (Em. Querido’s Uitgeverij), which has also been translated into several other languages, such as French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Turkish, Bulgarian, Croatian, Estonian, French, Lithuanian and Slovakian.
The film is produced by De Mensen, in co-production with CALA Film Central, CALA Film West and Juliet at Pupkin, and broadcasters VRT Ketnet, KiKA - Der Kinderkanal von ARD und ZDF and Proximus. The production is supported by the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), the Netherlands Film Fund, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, Hessen Film & Medien and Thüringer Staatskanzlei, and co-financed through the European Union, the Tax Shelter of the Federal Government of Belgium, and the Netherlands Production Incentive.
