Jérôme le Maire’s The Price of the Sun invited to Vision du Réel’s International Feature Film Competition

Jérôme le Maire’s new feature-length documentary The Price of the Sun (Du soleil et du plomb) is to receive its world premiere at this year’s Visions du Réel festival in Nyon where the film is screening in the International Feature Film Competition.

In The Price of the Sun, le Maire follows a Berber community when construction begins on one of the world’s largest renewable energy plants. The Nomads’ traditions exist in quiet conflict with the hyper-drive to supply renewable energy to the world. Ironically, the fight for resource control to connect the world may ultimately destroy a society that, by definition, shares resources and is obliged to be connected. Can there be enough sun and wind for everyone, or is the price too high?

The director explains that his film “raises the question of whether the construction of a renewable energy complex might have the surprising consequence of destroying the particularly subtle way of life of the Moroccan indigenous Nomad population. I strove to achieve precise and intimate observation of these Nomads and the values they cultivate, up until the moment they are confronted with the arrival of an unavoidable event that will lead them toward an unexpected future.”
