Irkalla: Gilgamesh’s Dream di Mohamed Al-Daradji in anteprima mondiale alla Piazza Grande di Locarno

Irkalla: Gilgamesh’s Dream (Irkalla: Il Sogno di Gilgamesh) di Mohamed Al-Daradji sarà presentato in anteprima mondiale al Locarno Film Festival di quest’anno, all’interno della prestigiosa sezione Piazza Grande.

SINOSSI

Baghdad, ottobre 2019. Chum-Chum, un bambino senzatetto e sognatore di nove anni, è convinto che il Tigri nasconda la porta di Irkalla, l’Aldilà, da dove può riportare in vita i genitori scomparsi – idea nata da una riflessione sulla leggenda di Gilgamesh. Nel momento in cui l’amico Moody finisce invischiato in un oscuro complotto militare, lui dovrà scegliere tra mito e salvezza.

Irkalla: Gilgamesh’s Dream (Irkalla: Il Sogno di Gilgamesh) è una storia di sofferenza, fede e della ricerca di luce in una città che si rifiuta di morire.

MOHAMED AL-DARADJI SUL SUO FILM

Irkalla: Gilgamesh’s Dream (Irkalla: Il Sogno di Gilgamesh) è più di un film. È un ritorno alla tavoletta finale perduta dell’Epica di Gilgamesh – quella strana, sfuggente tavoletta in cui Gilgamesh discende ancora una volta nell’oltretomba. Non per cercare l’immortalità, ma per ascoltare una voce interrotta, un giocattolo dimenticato, un’eco di risate, l’ombra di ciò che è andato perduto… Enkidu.

Credo che questo film sia quella tavoletta mancante – vista con occhi moderni, attraverso l’anima di un bambino di nome Chum-Chum, un ragazzino con il diabete che non scende a Irkalla per gloria, ma per ritrovare un padre e una madre svaniti prima ancora che potesse chiedere: “Perché?”

SUL REGISTA

Nato a Baghdad, Mohamed Al-Daradji è un regista pluripremiato, noto per il suo cinema potente e socialmente impegnato.

Dopo gli studi in Film e Televisione presso la Media Academy di Hilversum (Paesi Bassi), si trasferisce nel Regno Unito dove consegue due lauree in Cinematografia e Regia presso la Northern Film School di Leeds.

Oltre alla sua attività di regista, Mohamed Al-Daradji ha fondato l’Iraqi Independent Film Center, un’iniziativa pionieristica dedicata a promuovere indipendenza e creatività tra i cineasti iracheni, sia emergenti che affermati.
