The Weeping Walk (Waarom Wettelen) by Dimitri Verhulst

Short synopsis: In this absurd, at times surreal and a-typical road movie a deceased’s unexpected last will turns a funeral into a procession of several days across the countryside. Will the family survive this slow, exhaustive journey?

Extended synopsis: At Christine’s funeral, her husband Bass (Peter Van den Begin) and their family are stunned to learn that her final wish was to be buried in a distant and unfamiliar place called Wettelen. Despite their initial confusion, they decide to honour Christine’s request by embarking on a walking journey to the burial site. This peculiar pilgrimage turns into a comedic exploration of family dynamics, friendships, and past grievances. As they make their way through the countryside, they confront their own relationships and uncover hidden truths, turning a sombre occasion into a memorable grotesquely surreal adventure.

About the director/scriptwriter: The Weeping Walk is Dimitri Verhulst’s feature debut, both as director and scriptwriter. He’s best known for his literary work which is translated into 30 languages and three of his novels have already been adapted for the big screen: The Misfortunates (De helaasheid der dingen) by Felix van Groeningen which was selected for the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes, Problemski Hotel by Manu Riche and ANGEL by Koen Mortier which had its world premiere in Toronto.

Starring: Peter Van den Begin (also known from KING OF THE BELGIANS and THE BAREFOOT EMPEROR), Tom Vermeir (BELGICA), Dominique Van Malder (THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN), Hilde Heijnen (SINNER), Marijke Pinoy (CLEO) a.o.

Producers: Eurydice Gysel and Koen Mortier for Czar Film & TV (BE), in co-production with Graniet Film (NL)
