The Guest sells to multiple territories including US
Mads Mengel’s award‑winning feature debut The Guest has secured a first wave of sales across key territories, including the United States.
US rights have been picked up by Juno Films, joining L’atelier d’Images for France and Karma Films for Spain. The film has also landed distributors in Australia and New Zealand a.o. (Palace), Benelux (Cherry Pickers), the Czech Republic and Slovakia (CinemArt), Estonia (Estinfilm), Hungary (Vertigo Media), Israel (New Cinema), Lithuania (Kino Aljansas), Poland (Best Film), Slovenia a.o. (Fivia) and Switzerland (Praesens Film).
Discussions for additional territories are ongoing, with negotiations currently at various stages.
"It feels immensely gratifying to see all the right elements come together: a fantastic crew, a committed cast, a perfect festival launch, glowing reviews and, as a result, a wave of sales with outstanding distribution partners. Moments like these are rare in our industry, and when they do occur, it is a pleasure to be busy” - Tine Klint, CEO of LevelK
Starring Simon Bennebjerg, Josephine Park and Denmark's leading lady Trine Dyrholm, The Guest is a sharply observed family drama about Karl and Emilie, a young couple preparing for their first-born’s naming ceremony. When Karl’s estranged mother suddenly turns up, he wants her gone but his sister insists there won’t be any issues. Over one tense weekend, old patterns and buried wounds surface in front of in-laws and guests, until the celebration fractures into a confrontation.
The film received its world premiere at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival where it won both the Best Director and the Special Jury Award. Critics also emphasized Mengel’s deft blend of Nordic dark comedy and painful family tension, crafting a film that moves fluidly from cringe‑inducing humour to moments of deeply serious emotional weight.
Next on the festival circuit are the Busan International Film Festival and the Zurich Film Festival, with more announcements to come, underscoring The Guest’s continued global momentum.
The Guest is produced by Victor Cunha for Copenhagen‑based Monolit Film. The film received support from the New Danish Screen initiative from the Danish Film Institute (DFI) and Danish broadcaster DR. Nordic distribution is handled by Scanbox Entertainment, with worldwide sales managed by Copenhagen based international sales and aggregation house LevelK.
