Pluto Film adds Exotic to Cannes sales slate

International sales agency Pluto Film has boarded Exotic, a bold exploration of one woman’s intense journey toward self‑discovery through pole dancing. The film is written and directed by Sonja Orlewicz‑Zakrzewska, who here makes her directorial debut. Pluto will launch worldwide sales at this year’s Cannes Marché du Film.

In Exotic, a writer‘s quest to master pole dancing evolves into something far more profound when the community of dancers reveal the person she‘s meant to become. “As soon as I discovered exotic pole dance, I got so invested that I went straight to Exo Stars Camp,” explains the director. “I was fascinated by the clash of the fragile, intimate universes we carried within us around the camp. It soon became clear that the camp itself was a perfect place to confront fears, leave one’s comfort zone and express oneself more than daily life ever allows.“ Exotic was shot during a recent edition of Exo Stars Camp featuring real participants and instructors, thereby maintaining the authenticity of this vivid bubble.

“The writer's journey through pole dancing becomes a beautiful metaphor for breaking free from self-imposed limitations and embracing unexpected paths to self-discovery,” notes Pluto Film’s managing director Daniela Cölle. “It's precisely the kind of emotionally intelligent, character-driven cinema that Pluto Film stands for. Based on Sonja’s personal story, this debut speaks about universal human themes like connection, reinvention and belonging. We look forward to bringing this remarkable film to audiences worldwide and are thrilled to begin this partnership with Mozaika Films, representing a film that captures the transformative power of community and the courage it takes to discover who we're meant to become.”

“We are delighted to have Pluto Film by our side,” adds Magdalena Sztorc of Mozaika Films, the film’s producer. “Exoticis a bold, electrifying debut that plunges into a rarely seen subculture, tracing one woman's fierce journey toward self-realisation with wit, edge and raw intimacy. Performed by the finest of Poland's young acting generation - Jaśmina Polak, Bartosz Bielenia, Magdalena Koleśnik and Monika Frajczyk - it has become a film that dares to be different. We are convinced that together with Pluto, Exotic will find its audience across festivals and beyond.”

Born in 1990, Orlewicz‑Zakrzewska is a director, scriptwriter, visual artist and photographer. She holds a master’s degree in photography from the Cinematography Department of the Łódź Film School. Her first short, Cross’n’Carry (2019), screened at festivals including New Horizons, HollyShorts and BEAST Portugal. She also took part in the script training lab Atelier Scenariuszowe and the EAVE Producers Workshop (2021). As a cinematographer, she worked on Enthusiasts, a documentary series for Canal+. Her video art and photography have been shown in numerous exhibitions, including the Leica Gallery Warsaw.

Exotic stars Jaśmina Polak, Magdalena Koleśnik and Monika Frajczyk. Director of Photography is Adam Suzin, with Tomasz Kajetan Naruszewicz as Editor and Tymek Papior as Composer.to here. The film received support from the Polish Film Institute’s micro‑budget scheme aimed at first-time directors.
