Mads Mengel’s The Guest Captures Best Director and Special Jury Prize at Karlovy Vary

Mads Mengel’s feature debut The Guest has taken home the Best Director Award and the Special Jury Prize at this year's 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where the film celebrated its world premiere. The title also marked a milestone for Danish cinema, becoming the first Danish film selected for the festival’s main competition since 2015.

“I’m deeply grateful for the way both the audience and the jury have received our film,” says Mengel in a first reaction. “Being invited to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival was already beyond anything I could have imagined, and to leave with both the Best Director Award as well as the Special Jury Prize is truly overwhelming. It has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.”

Producer Victor Cunha of Monolit Film adds: “Receiving the Special Jury Prize and the Best Director award is an incredible honour. I’m deeply grateful to the jury and to Karlovy Vary for believing in The Guest. For me, this award is also a reminder that intimate, character‑driven dramas still have a vital place on the big screen. I couldn’t be prouder of Mads, our cast and our crew.”

The film’s reception throughout the festival was equally striking. The Guest earned standing ovations at both its world premiere and its second public screening, and was met with a wave of critical acclaim that continued to build across the week.

Critics repeatedly praised the film’s magnetic performances, its unsettling emotional charge, and Mengel’s assured handling of a knotty domestic drama. Trine Dyrholm’s portrayal of Vibeke, the volatile, estranged mother whose sudden arrival upends a family celebration, was highlighted as a standout, with reviewers calling her performance “magnetic” and noting that she “steals practically every scene.”

Critics also emphasized Mengel’s deft blend of Nordic dark comedy and painful family tension, crafting a film that moves fluidly from cringe‑inducing humour to moments of deeply serious emotional weight.

The Guest is produced by Victor Cunha for Copenhagen‑based Monolit Film. The film is supported by the New Danish Screen initiative from the Danish Film Institute (DFI) and Danish broadcaster DR. Nordic distribution is handled by Scanbox Entertainment, with international sales managed by LevelK.
